Meet Shelly

Shelley Davis has been a dedicated Meals on Wheels Yuba-Sutter volunteer for nearly three years and has become one of the program’s most vital and compassionate volunteers. Known for her reliability, strong relationships with participants, and willingness to step up whenever needed, Shelley consistently goes above and beyond to support older adults in our community.
Shelley’s journey with Meals on Wheels began when she started tagging along with a close friend who was already volunteering. Seeing the impact firsthand brought her a sense of joy and purpose, inspiring her to join the program and make a difference in her community. Over the past three years, she has maintained the same route, allowing her to build deep trust and meaningful relationships with participants.
Through these relationships, Shelley has formed special bonds with many of the older adults on her route. In some cases, those connections have grown beyond the weekly meal delivery visits, with Shelley offering additional kindness, check-ins, and personal support in ways that reflect the relationships she has built over time. From helping participants navigate small day-to-day challenges—like assisting with prescriptions, technology, or transportation—to simply being a consistent and caring presence, Shelley brings compassion and companionship to every visit. She also acts as an important set of “eyes and ears,” helping staff stay informed about the well-being of the older adults she visits. One participant who moved to Bakersfield to be closer to family still keeps in touch with Shelley through monthly phone calls, ending each conversation with “I love you.” These meaningful connections highlight the powerful sense of community and companionship that Meals on Wheels helps create.
Shelley’s impact extends far beyond her route. She regularly supports route coverage, outreach events, and community presentations, helping share the Meals on Wheels mission with local organizations and community groups by providing the volunteer perspective. She has represented the program in local parades, supported holiday food drives by helping coordinate donation bins and collections, and assisted with preparing and delivering holiday bags for participants. Shelley also helps with operational support, including maintaining and preparing the Meals on Wheels vehicle and ensuring it is ready for use when needed. She has even welcomed local media to join her on her route to showcase the impact of Meals on Wheels in the community.
Thanks to Shelley’s strong presence and passion for Meals on Wheels, she has directly and indirectly helped recruit several of our current volunteers by encouraging others to get involved and sharing her experience throughout the community.
We are incredibly grateful for Shelley’s dedication, advocacy, and compassion. Her commitment to supporting older adults and strengthening Meals on Wheels Yuba-Sutter truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism.
