Elder Abuse Awareness & Prevention

We all deserve to age awesomely—free from the fear of harm and neglect.
That means living with safety, dignity, connection, and the freedom to make our own choices.
Aging can be vibrant, joyful, and full of possibility. And creating communities where older adults can truly thrive means looking out for one another and knowing when something isn’t right.
Elder abuse isn’t always obvious—but recognizing the signs can make a life-changing difference. It can take many forms, including:
- Physical abuse: causing pain or injury, or using restraints without consent
- Neglect: not providing basic needs like food, shelter, medical care, or personal support
- Financial abuse: misusing or exploiting someone’s money, property, or assets
- Emotional or psychological abuse: using threats, intimidation, or hurtful language to cause fear or distress
- Isolation: limiting contact with friends, family, or community
- Abduction: taking someone out of state without their consent
- Self-neglect: when someone is unable to care for their own basic needs due to health or cognitive challenges
For some older adults—especially those from LGBTQ+ communities or culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds—barriers like language, stigma, or past experiences can make it harder to seek help. That’s why awareness, compassion, and inclusive outreach matter.
When we stay informed, check in on one another, and build trust, we help make sure everyone has the opportunity to age safely, confidently—and yes, awesomely.
If you suspect abuse:
- In an emergency, call 911.
- For non-emergencies, contact your county's Adult Protective Services for support.
